Bipolar disorder, if severe, can be considered to cause disability, however we do not play a role in that. Applying for and getting disability is a legal issue and lawyers can request medical records to support their claims and application on your behalf.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically psychiatrists are the most confident amongst physicians to diagnose bipolar disorder. Occasionally family medicine physicians are the first line physicians to deal with mental health concerns, as they come up in their patients who they are primary care physicians for and then they may diagnose bipolar disorder. Most often however, they will make a preliminary diagnosis and then defer to a psychiatrist for their expertise and for ongoing treatment recommendations.
How do psychiatrists test for bipolar disorder?
Psychiatrists assess and “test” for bipolar disorder with careful questioning as part of their assessment, which may include specific questionnaires that assess for signs and symptoms of mood episodes. We may even ask patients to participate in mood charting in order to gather better data on the symptoms. We also take a thorough history and observe our patients and perform a mental status examination which leads us to a specific diagnosis. As is the case for all mental health diagnoses, collateral information from friends and family is always helpful as well. Bipolar disorder is a longitudinal diagnosis and requires observation and history over a period of time due to the nature of its mood episodes.

“Mood swings” can present themselves most commonly in bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, intermittent explosive disorder as well as depression and PMDD. Other personality disorders also can have mood swings and occasionally severe anxiety which can be a part of any of the major anxiety disorders can also cause irritability in individuals which may be perceived as a “mood swing.

We see and treat all adults 18 and above for any mood symptoms including “mood swings”.
Which doctors can prescribe mood stabilizers?
Technically all medical doctors and physicians can prescribe mood stabilizers, however psychiatrists are the most qualified in utilizing mood stabilizers for mental health concerns and would be considered the “specialists” in this regard.
What therapy is best for mood swings?
There are various different kinds of psychotherapy that can help with “mood swings”. Some of the more common ones include;
1) Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) helps with stabilization with daily rhythms, such as sleeping, waking and mealtimes and ultimately having a consistent routine allows for more mood stabilization, which decreases “mood swings”.
2) Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which helps examine the relationship between your thoughts, behaviors and the feelings they elicit. This helps to identify unhealthy negative beliefs and replaces them with positive more healthy ones.
3) Family focused therapy is helpful for mood swings since families play a role in witnessing the mood swings and at times know the triggers and may be a part of the triggers for patients and therefore therapy focused on the family unit can help control mood swings for certain patients.
